Nova too good in Premier
A star-studded NOVA side took the Men’s Premier Division with a 31-17 win over the New York Athletic Club in the final.
To reach the final of the six-team Premier Division, NOVA posted victories over Long Island I (38-12), the Philippine Barbarians (40-12) and the Nova Scotia Celtics (53-0).
The NYAC defeated Nova Scotia (36-7), Step-Dads (15-14) and Long Island (17-7).
In the final NOVA went out to a 19-5 halftime lead on tries by Ed Stockunas, Seta Tuilevuka, and Filimoni Botitu, with Tuilevuka adding two conversions. The NYAC’s John Barret scored just before the break, 19-5.
The NYAC’s James Denise scored two tries after the restart, the second converted by Justin Hundley, to narrow the gap to 19-17.
NOVA responded with tries by Botitu and Fred Wintermantel, the first converted by Hundley, to win comfortably, 31-17.
The victory earned NOVA a check from USA 7s LLC, and would have qualified the team to the finals of the USA Sevens Championship Series. However, NOVA has already qualified, so NYAC and 3rd-place Long Island earned places in that tournament, to be held in Las Vegas in February.
Gizmo’s Gorillas beat Hercules for Club
Gizmo’s Gorillas, a collection of players from Philadelphia and Baltimore, won the Men’s Club Division with a 26-14 win over the Pillars of Hercules from Gibraltar.
The Pillars of Hercules recorded round robin wins over the Suffolk Bullmoose (38-0), Centaurs (24-7) and TMR (42-7). They then topped Long Island II (5-0) in their semifinal.
Gizmo’s Gorillas defeated Bear Mountain Picnic (43-0) and Barrhaven Scottish (19-0) in the prelims and Bohica (24-5) in the semifinals.
Hosts take major Women's honours
Led by the three tries of Laura Bilazarian, the New York RFC secured the Championship of the seven-team Women’s Premier Division with a 22-10 win in the final over the Leftovers.
To reach the final New York defeated CRQ (26-3), Leftovers (19-0) and SPUFTA (25-0).
Leftovers defeated CRQ (29-0), lost to New York (0-19) and defeated Slim Pickings (24-17) in the semifinal.
In the final the Leftovers went out to an early lead when US 7s 'A' player Katy Dowty touched down, 5-0. New York tied the game when Laura Bilazarian kicked ahead from the 30 and recovered possession to score, 5-5. A try by Nicole Humphrey that Cary White converted gave New York a 12-5 lead at the break.
Dowty’s second try cut New York’s lead to 12-10, but it would then be one-way traffic as Laura Bilazarian’s two tries gave New York a comfortable 22-10 win
