Last qualifiers for CCS at NY 7s

Friday 27 November 2009 (UR7s)

This weekend sees the 51st New York Thanksgiving Sevens take place, with the last two qualification spots for the Championship Cup Series Finals the main attraction.

The NY Thanksgiving Sevens is one of five select tournaments in the USA, with the finalists from each qualifying for the Championship Cup Series Finals on the weekend of the IRB USA Sevens 2010 in Las Vegas.

With eight teams already qualified from the Las Vegas, Cape Fear, Denver and Kansas City Sevens, this tournament sees the last opportunity to get a chance to play for $10,000 in February.

Although there are only six teams entering the main competition in New York and one being NOVA who have already qualified, the Philippine Barbarians, Long Island, Step Dads, NYAC and Nova Scotia Keltics all have an opportunity to join the exclusive list.

The two finalists from the event will join Belmont Shore, OMBAC, Life, NOVA, Denver, Aspen, Glendale and Kansas City in Las Vegas in February with two more wild card entrants also set to be announced.

The NY Thanksgiving Sevens is the largest and longest running Sevens tournament in the US and has been held on the Saturday following Thanksgiving since 1959.

At the 50th anniversary last year Elite ID beat NOVA 7-0 in a pulsating final, and the tournament even won the ‘Tournament Experience’ award in the UR7s end of season awards.

Played in some insanely freezing temperatures, 100 teams from all over the world competed in seven different tournaments. With the skyline of New York as the background it’s an incredible setting with teams having the ability to train on central park in the days leading up to the tournaments.

This year will be no different either, with women’s, club, under-19, collegiate, old boys and social tournaments running concurrently and over 120 teams entering.
