South Africa primed for Dubai defence

Wednesday 25 November 2009 (UR7s)

Paul Treu has named the 12 players that will be defend both their Dubai and George crowns, as the build up to the start of the 2009/10 IRB Sevens continues.

Treu includes highly rated youngsters Cecil Afrika and JW Jonker into his squad, with the defending overall champions heading to the desert as favourites.

The experienced Marius Schoeman has gone back on his decision to retire and is also included along with regulars Mpho Mbiyozo, Kyle Brown, Mzwandile Stick, MJ Mentz, Ryno Benjamin and Frankie Horne, while Paul Delport captains the side for the first time.

Renfred Dazel is a notable absentee, as he continues to recover from a knee injury by playing at this weekend’s Sri Lanka Sevens for the SA Vipers instead.

South Africa were dominant in pre-season sweeping to wins in Namibia, Middelburg and Singapore.

The Boks will be sporting a new Canterbury designed Sevens jersey this season. Made from an extremely lightweight, quick-drying fabric it is designed to minimise perspiration to enhance the players' performance.

"The jersey is made from a lighter material which the players like and the close-fitting style makes it more difficult to grab the jersey," said Delport.

South Africa squad for Dubai and George: Mpho Mbiyozo, Chase Minnaar, Kyle Brown, Mzwandile Stick, MJ Mentz, Paul Delport (c), Cecil Afrika, JW Jonker, Ryno Benjamin, Marius Schoeman, Neil Powell, Frankie Horne.
