Quins storm to Christie Sevens title

Sunday 22 November 2009 (UR7s)

Maik Kwamba from RFUEA in Nairobi

Kenya Harlequin FC have been crowned the new Christie Sevens champions courtesy of a comprehensive 31-17 win over Nakuru RFC in a thrilling final played at the RFUEA. Nakura were going fo suprise back-to-back victories on Kenya’s NSC but were undone by the hosts.

The new champions got off to a flyer when Dennis Muhanji picked a loose Nakuru ball to touch down under the posts early on. David Gitau converted to give Quins a 7-0 lead.

The ever dangerous Oscar Ouma, who was one of Kenya's mainstays during the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy in Nairobi in April, would soon narrow the scores for the Wanyore of Nakuru when he touched down, making amends for his loose pass that gifted Quins the opener.

Calvin Otieno missed the conversion as Quins led 7-5. Otieno would put Nakuru ahead when he grounded the ball after Oscar Ouma's spadework. His conversion saw the Wanyore lead 12-7.

A moment of indecision from Nakuru would soon gift Quins an equalizing try from Naftali Bondo. Gitau missed this conversion, keeping the two sides tied at 12-12.

The drama continued unfolding during this half when Davies Yanga scored Nauru’s third try. Otieno missed this conversion as Nakuru took a 17-12 lead heading into the half time recess.

Quins were quick off the blocks in the second half; former Kenya Sevens player Alan Makaka delivered a cheeky cross kick that was grounded by Bondo. Gitau was sure with the conversion, giving Quins a 19-17 lead.

Collins Omae, three try hero for Kenya against the US Junior Eagles during the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy put Quins noses further ahead when he touched down soon after his inclusion. Gitau missed this conversion as Quins led 24-17.

Allan Omuka handed Quins the trophy when his try under the posts put Quins in a commanding position and the score remained 31-17 lead that they would hold on to.

Quins consolidated their second position on the Western Union National Sevens Circuit log with 49 points, just a point behinud Nakuru who are on 50 points, making the next round in Nakuru more interesting.

Impala RFC won the plate with a 47-0 win over Masinde Muliro University while JKUAT claimed the bowl after beating Mombasa Polytechnic 17-5. USIU upset Nondies 12-0 in claiming the shield.
