Fiji announce 2009/10 contracts

Last year’s runners-up Fiji have announced a block of 20 contracted players for this year’s IRB Sevens World Series. A further 12-man squad will be be selected for the first two legs at Dubai Sevens and George Sevens.

The squad includes last year’s regulars with Emosi Vucago, Seremaia Burotu, and Pio Tuwai all set to play an integral role in the islander’s campaign. William Ryder is once again included in a squad but is still not guaranteed a place for Dubai.

Also included in the squad are Nasoni Rokobiau and Asaeli Boko, both currently with the 15-a-side Fijian team on their Northern Hemisphere tour.

One newcomer is 21-year-old youngster Waisale Beci making him the first Vuda native to win a rugby contract.
The Police Blues club will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of local legends Wai-sale Tora and Iferei-mi Rawaqa.

"The sevens contract has given me the best opportunity to continue and develop as a rugby player," he said.

Many of Fiji's players have prepared for new season by turning out for the likes of Davetalevu at the SCC 7s, South Sea Drifters at Gold Coast International Sevens, and Suva Sevens Series.

Digicel Fiji CEO, John Delves said “On behalf of everyone in Digicel I would like to congratulate the team selected for the opening stages of the 2009 IRB series.”

“Months of hard work have paid off for the players, and Digicel would like to wish them all the very best of luck for the upcoming games.

“We are delighted that a greater number of players will get the chance to play this year and I am sure they will do Fiji proud as they have done in the 2008/9 series,” he said.
