Guyana pip T&T at NACRA 7s

Monday 16 November 2009 (UR7s & Brian Lewis)

It proved a magical weekend for Guyana at the NACRA Sevens in Mexico City, with the men and women’s teams both taking the major titles.

Guyana’s men won the 2009 NACRA Sevens, for the 4th consecutive year and will represent the region at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India alongside Canada. Not to be out done the Guyana’s women retained their Caribbean Crown over the two day round-robin event.

In the men’s event Guyana narrowly defeated a strong Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) side 12-10 in what proved a closely fought finale to the weekend. T&T’s two missed conversions from acute angles proving decisive.
The champions proved in irresistible form on day 1 of the competition beating Guadeloupe (52-7), Caymen (26-0), Dominican (30-7) and the highly rated Bahamas 26-12.

Trinidad & Tobago, Bahamas, Jamaica, Cayman Islands and Mexico will join host Union Guyana as the regions representatives in the 2010 CACSO Men’s Sevens in Guyana.

In the Plate final, Bahamas, the surprise package of the tournament defeated Martinique 28-10 while in the Bowl Final Cayman defeated Jamaica 10-7 with a last minute drop goal. In the Shield final host union defeated Bermuda 14-12 to claim the all important 5th qualification place for the CACSO Games 2010.

In the Women's Championship, Guyana proved too classy for the teams from St Lucia, Cayman, Mexico and Bahamas. St Lucia placed 2nd with host Union Mexico placing 3rd after two days of gruelling rugby in the Mexico City altitude.

Although T&T’s Calypso Warriors were dismayed to lose a closely fought final for the second year in succession, Trinidad and Tobago Rugby Football Union (TTRFU) president Leslie Figaro is confident that T&T will rebound.

"They did not disgrace the country. You have to respect Guyana for their 7s rugby track record . They have held the crown for the last four years.

“The TTRFU with the support of the Ministry of Sport ,notwithstanding the economic environment, will seek to provide the T&T players and coaches with the technical support that is necessary ," added Figaro.

How come Jamaica ended up in the top 5. Shoudn't it be Martinique since they were 2nd in the plate competition?

Congratulations to Guyanas 7's victory. I played Rugby there in the early fifties. At that time we had three teams. East Coast Demerera; Georgetown and Berbice.. I played for Guyana a few times and remember a Guyanese player 'Polly Pollard' who was a well known all rounder. I don't think we were very good, but we did enjoy ourselves, Great days, Alastair Craig X Enmore Plantation

Martinique are not an independent member of the iRB. They come under the French Rugby Union. As do Gaudeloupe.
