Nakuru RFC are the winners of the Dala Sevens, the first leg of the National Sevens Circuit after beating Kenya Harlequins 22-0 in the main cup final at the two dayer at Kisumu Polytechnic.
The Wanyore were quick off the blocks, Davies Yanga landing the try after chipping his marker and touching down on two minutes. Simon Wariuki converted for a 7-0 lead.
This spurred the Rift Valley side on, Yanga's darting run unlocking the Quins defence before former Maseno student Calvin Otieno touched down. Wariuki missed this conversion as Nakuru led 12-0 on five minutes.
Nakuru eased off, allowing Quins to come back into the game but the Ngong' Road side were unable to break through as the Wanyore led 12-0 going into the break.
The second half saw Quins take the game to Nakuru,their brightest spark being a Tony Mutai foray into Nakuru territory. Simon Warui would soon score the easiest of tries when he chanced on a lucky bounce from a loose ball to touch down. Wariuki missed as Nakuru led 17-0.
Nakuru skipper Nick Lang'o soon skipped past his marker to score, Wariuki's missed conversion did not matter as Nakuru ran off 22-0 winners, claiming 30 points and pole position after leg one of the National Sevens Circuit.
Simpson Osiemo,handling Nakuru during this tournament termed his side's success an over achievement, as they had an eye on a semi final berth.Osiemo further said that he wants his side to consolidate their pole position by playing extremely well in the remaining four tournaments.
Kenya Harlequin's Enos Otieno was happy with his young side's success, adding that he was looking forward to the rest of the circuit.
Nakuru made it to the final courtesy of a 5-0 quarter final win over Mwamba and a 12-5 semi final win over Impala while Quins were 17-7 quarter final winners over KCB and 17-5 semi final winners over Strathmore Leos.
PLATE FINAL
KCB led 24-0 at half time before beating Nondescripts RUFC 31-0 to claim the Dala Sevens plate title.
Tournament top try scorer Brian Omondi opened KCB's account one minute into the match, selling his Nondies opponent an outrageous dummy before touching down under the post. Peter Mutai's conversion gave the bankers a 7-0 lead.
The Lions continued to dominate possession with Mutai pulling the strings. Mark Okwaro scored a second try after a string of passes that opened up the Nondies defence. Mutai missed this conversion as the scores read 12-0 in KCB's favour.
A rare Nondies attack was soon thwarted, seeing KCB regain possession through Mutai who scored and converted his own try.
KCB 19 Nondies 0.
With the buzzer going off to signal half time, Okwaro skipped past his markers to land his brace. Mutai missed as KCB led 24-0.
Second half action saw KCB retain possession for large spells before Omondi scored his tournament leading ninth try that Mutai
converted for a 31-0 lead.
Joe Akivuga showed KCB's Dedan Omondi a clean pair of heels to land an unconverted consolation try for Nondies as the match ended 31-5 in KCB/s favour.
BOWL FINAL
Home side Kisumu RFC were up against coastal side Mombasa and both sides took time reading the game. Resultantly the first half was a tense affair that was scoreless going into the break.
Second half brought with it more decisive play from the home side who had to endure some resistance from a determined Mombasa side.
Alvin Okongo broke the deadlock, scoring an unconverted try for Kisumu after a steady build up. Zen Midamba's dummy cleared his way to the try line. Will Abungu converted to give Kisumu a 12-0 lead. Midamba completed his brace minutes later with a another unconverted try as Kisumu claimed the bowl courtesy of a 17-0 win.
JKUAT beat Bungoma RFC 21-14 to claim the Shield title.
Nakuru's Davies Yanga claimed the tournament's Most Valuable Player award with Brian Omondi of KCB claiming the top try scorer's award, scoring nine tries.
Eldoret Flames were voted most disciplined team.
Respected coaches Michael "Tank" Otieno and Bill Githinji were impressed with the tournament's organisation as well as the depth of talent that was on display, considering the fact that 26 top sevens players were missing from this event due to national team committments.
The Western Union National Sevens Circuit now heads to Nairobi on 21st November when the Christie Sevens is played at the RFUEA.
