Suva Series will help Fiji

Thursday 5 November 2009 (UR7s and Fiji Times)

56 men's teams will be battling it out for the Suva 7 Series takes place on Friday and Saturday at the TFL National Stadium.

"There were some teams which wanted to pay later this week but we needed to get the pools and draws done," Rauca said.

"So we had to go with 56 teams as the logistical side of the tournament needed to be done."

The likes of the Army, Police, Red Rock, Sandhill, Wardens, Nasinu, Lomaiviti and Ratu Filise have all entered the race for the $5000 first prize.

"This is a great build-up to the Digicel International 7s Festival to be held in January," Rauca said.

Apart from the men's teams, there will be the women's grade, veterans, Indo-Fijian and Under-19 teams playing.

The Digicel Suva Rugby Festival in January will see 200 international and national teams competing.

The Suva Rugby Festival 2010 is the largest international sevens festival ever planned in Fiji and will be the first international sevens tournament in ten years.

The festival was officially launched by the Suva Rugby Union in July as part of the build-up to its centenary celebrations in 2012.

Suva is expected to host international sevens teams from Tonga, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Manawatu and Hong Kong.

Red Rock Head Coach Lote Rasiga has welcomed the move by the Suva Rugby Union to revive club competition this weekend.

Rasiga said previously the national team excelled at the international scene because of the domestic tournaments which helps identifies the local talents from various clubs.

"I support what SRU has done. This is usually done in previous years and I believe sevens will soon reach newer heights because of this," he said.

Fiji’s squad are currently in training ahead of the first two legs of the 2009/10 IRB Sevens World Series campaign in Dubai and George.
