Mexico 7s challenge Belmont Shore
The number one club sevens team in America - Belmont Shore – is set to play against the Mexican National 7s team at Cal State Long Beach this weekend.
Mexico currently participates in only one IRB 7s tournament each year - the USA leg of the competition - and has suffered some heavy defeats during that time. As part of their preparation for the 2009/2010 season they sought out the 2009 USA National Club 7s champions Belmont Shore. It also helps that Belmont is located in Southern California, and if this event is successful it could becoming a regular fixture.
“We are very excited about this opportunity,” said Belmont Shore 7s coach James Walker “especially with the direction we plan to take this club”.
Walker is referring to his 7s team playing in an least one international event each season. Belmont Shore will travel to Kenya next year for the exciting Safari 7s tournament in which many IRB sides are sending teams.
“These sort of tournaments will help our club improve, as well as draw talent from across the States” Walker added.
Belmont enjoyed a very successful tour to South Africa in December of 2007 attending the Nelson Mandela PE 7s tournament. Springbok 7s coach Paul Treu was in attendance with the South African Academy 7s team winning the event that year. Belmont produced some excellent results, and changed many perceptions about American rugby.
This weekend USA 7s Eagle Peter Sio (National 7s MVP for 2009) will captain the Belmont side – although some players from the Championship side will not be unavailable.
