The USA is not the only nation bringing in athletes from other sports into Sevens. Former Australian sprinter Kurt Mulcahy will pull on a Northern Territory Mosquitoes shirt at next weeks Singapore 7s.
The 20-year-old quit an Australian Institute of Sport athletics place in July to join Canberra club, Gungahlin Eagles.
He now has a scholarship with the ACT Brumbies and is in the Australian Sevens training squad.
Mulcahy - whose best time for the 100m in 10.7secs - was one of 12 players named yesterday by Mozzies coach Tony Bundock for next week's trip to Singapore.
"He'll certainly add some pace to our side," Bundock said.
Mulcahy was once courted by NRL team the Roosters but switched to athletics hoping for a berth at the Olympics.
He missed Beijing but finished fourth in the 400m at the junior world championships in Poland last year, running 45.65secs, and was considered a rising star on the track scene.
He will be joined in Singapore by teenage Manly flanker Harrison Bergelin, another player Australian selectors have in their sights.
Former Northern Territory and Queensland Country loose forward Sean Kearns, the new coach of Palmerston, will captain the Mozzies.
"There are a lot young kids in the team and Sean has played a fair bit of representative rugby," Bundock said.
"We need his leadership."
The side also includes Alice Springs flyer Shaylan Parai who impressed with the Mozzies at the Heineken Hottest 7s in the World in Darwin last January.
"He was noticed by Australian selectors then and they made comment about how good he was," Bundock said.
Bundock said a third of the squad was 18 years old and under.
"We're looking to the future and starting to build now," he said.
But he had high aims for the tournament in Singapore.
"It's hard the say until you get there but we are looking to be in the top eight sides," he said.
"We will be looking to make the semis of the cup or be in the final of the plate."
