São José eased to victory at their home tournament , the São José Sevens, at the weekend. They overcame a spirited Pasteur side on Sunday’s Men ‘Gold Final’ match, 28-10, and were rarely threatened all weekend.
The Sevens buzz was very much in evidence on a cloudless weekend in the Brazillian City. The announcement that Sevens will be part of the Rio de Janiero 2016 Olympics is still proving big news in rugby circles in South America.
The home side didn’t concede a point on the opening day confidently seeing off Rio Branco (42-0), Taubate (47-0), and Varginha (38-0) with ease.
Runners-up, Pasteur, overcame their opening defeat to Desterro (5-7) to cruise through to the semi-finals courtesy of wins over Brazil M-19s (15-0) and Curitiba (19-0).
They enjoyed a 17-7 win in their semi-final against Ilha Rugby whilst the eventual champions were clinical in their last four clash against Band (28-0).
In the Women’s competition it was SPAC A who triumphed beating Niteroi (19-5), whilst in the Youth event it was the youngsters from Jacarei who edged out Curitiba, 12-5.
