Philippines next for IRB Asian Sevens

Friday 9 October 2009 (UR7s)

The next leg of the IRB Asian Sevens Series takes place on Saturday (October 10) at the Remy Sports Complex in the Philippines. The event is the first major Sevens tournament since the news of Rugby’s entry into the 2016 Olympics.

The Subic Sevens won’t see any international teams on show but have various strong local sides and some Australian touring sides attending.

“This is certainly massive for Rugby in Asia, having a circuit that will help grow attention from what Hong Kong Sevens has done,” said Matt Cullen who was speaking exclusively to UR7s.

Cullen, the tournament organiser and national 15-a-side coach, is expecting eight Men’s sides backed up by six Women’s teams for the one dayer, that is backed by the IRB.

The event will also serve as a trial for the Philippines Sevens side, coached by Rick Hartley, ahead of the Brunei and Borneo legs of the Asian Series.

“The Philippines side has bags of promise and grabbed a gold medal at the South East Games in 2005,” added Cullen.

Cullen is hoping to see more international teams compete at the Subic Sevens next year, with many of the sides choosing the Brunei and Borneo legs over heading to the Philippines.

Korea won the first leg of the Series at the Shanghai Sevens back in September.

UR7s will have all the results from the Philippines next week.
