Olympic Special on Total Rugby Radio

Friday 2 October 2009 (IRB)

Tune into the IRB's Total Rugby Radio's Olympic Special!

The International Rugby Board's top brass are in Copenhagen ahead of the IOC session next week where Rugby Sevens' fate will be decided: Will it become part of the sports programme for the 2016 Olympic Games?

We hear from IRB Chief Executive Mike Miller on the latest lobbying and developments ahead of the vote.

RUGBY SEVENS: A STARTLING EVOLUTION
Modest beginnings: The game of Sevens was launched from modest beginnings, as nothing more than a fundraisier 126 years ago in the Scottish Borders town of Melrose. We hear from local historian Jack Dun, Melrose Sevens regular Gavin Hastings.

The magic of Hong Kong: Following Scotland's lead, it was in the Far East that Sevens really began to blossom, thanks to the finest tournament of its kind, the Hong Kong Sevens. We hear from the founders and their star attraction: Waisale Serevi.

England win first Melrose Cup - 1993: Having established a foothold on the international stage, Sevens returned to its Scottish roots for the inaugural World Cup at Murrayfield in 1993. We hear from winners England, including Lawrence Dallaglio and captain Andy Harriman.

Fiji's Melrose Cup - 1997: Four years on, New Zealand were hoping to keep up their strong form in Hong Kong and South Africa had a team of all-stars, but Fiji had other ideas. We hear from Joost van der Westhuizen and Serevi.

THE OTHER GITEAU: MEET KRISTY
Earlier this year the Wallaroos made history when they won the very first women's Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai and since then the team has taken on a new recruit, with a very high profile name. Meet Kristy Giteau.
