Bumper day for O2 Scrum on Beach finalists

Tuesday 29 September 2009 (RFU)

Austin Healey and Paul Sackey helped 12 teams celebrate a dream day out at Twickenham in the O2 Scrum on the Beach finals day last Friday, marking the culimination of the series.

The tournament consisted of the most stylish sides in action at this summer’s eight O2 Scrum on the Beach festivals as selected by Sackey. They were joined by four teams who won competition prizes in the RFU Grand Draw and on O2’s Maximum Rugby website.

Maldon won five of their six games and claimed the cup on points difference from Hampshire team Fifield and Hertford side The Brady Bunch.

Southport’s 2 Hot 2 Touch claimed the plate award and the Broadland Bozies from Norfolk lifted the bowl.

“In all it’s been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and fantastic to be able to play on the Twickenham pitch,” said Maldon’s Simon Peacock.

“Lining up in the tunnel and running out was a big thrill, as was standing up to sing the national anthem.”

O2 Scrum on the Beach is part of the Play On campaign, which is also supported by the National Sports Foundation. It has created a network of 1400 O2 Pathfinders to guide young players on their rugby journey, promoted rugby directly to thousands of teenagers, and created more teams, competitions, coaches and referees to sustain the growth of the game.

RFU Community Rugby Director Andrew Scoular said: "O2 Scrum on the Beach series has been a major success and we’re delighted to have been able to expand the programme with O2’s continued support to provide even more playing opportunities this year.

“The finals day at Twickenham was a fantastic day out for all the teams and made even more special by Austin Healey’s hosting of the day and Paul Sackey’s continued support on and off the pitch.”

O2 Head of Sports Sponsorship Nic Fletcher added: "This builds on the success of a great second year of O2 Scrum on the Beach and we've had a fantastic series this summer ending with a superb finals day at Twickenham. It's been a wonderful celebration of the game from grassroots to glory."
