The Cooks Islands and Samoa both struck Gold in the Men’s and Women’s Touch Rugby competitions at the VII Pacific Mini Games.
It was Cook Islands, host of the games, who proved comfortably the strongest side in the Men’s event seeing off a spirited Fiji 9-4 in the final. The winners had cruised through earlier rounds courtesy of with a 13-5 win over PNG, a clinical 7-1 win over Niue. They also beat Samoa 8-5 and enjoyed 6-3 win over Fiji in the Round Robin format.
Their semi final win proved a lot tougher affair scrapping to a 7-6 win over Samoa, the second seeds in the tournament. Jason Roi was Cook Islands most potent force scoring 10 times throughout the two days. In the bronze medal playoff it was Samoa who won the bronze medal after being defeated by Fiji in the preliminary final (8-9), which decided who would meet Cook Islands in the final.
The Cooks girls had settle for a silver medal when they went down to Samoa 4 points to 5 in low scoring finale of the Women’s competition. Niue took the bronze medal courtesy of losing the preliminary final to Samoa (2-6).
The Cook Islands women’s team had a convincing win over Niue 7-1 to head straight into the finals against Samoa. But according to co-captain Mary Adams fatigue and straying awayfrom the set game plan contributed to the Cooks’ demise.
“We didn’t move the ball as often as we should have and that was definitely part of why we lost,” says Adams.
The girls still have a chance to wear a gold medal with the mixed competition due to starting today and finishing on Tuesday with the hosts firm favourites.
