Namibia Sevens gives Pumas chance to develop

Friday 25 September 2009 (UR7s, UAR, Planet Rugby)

Argentina’s Pumas are excited about their chances for this weekend’s Namibia Sevens despite bringing a relatively new team to Windhoek.

Coached by Nicholas Fernandez Lobbe they include IRB World Sevens Series performers such as Martin Bustos Moyano, Francisco Merello, and Horacio San Martin. With the side in transition the tournament gives further opportunities for new players to be blooded in International conditions.

“These matches are a good opportunity to judge some new players. The Sevens are in a transition stage, with players going to play for the 15-a-side team (Jaguars) and also playing abroad. It is good so that some players obtain international experience which will be beneficial for the team,” said Moyano.

The Pumas are grouped in Pool C with Zimbabwe and Cranes of Uganda, with the World Sevens Cup Finalists confident of making it through to the latter stages. There they could meet the likes of South Africa and Fiji both favourites for the tournament.

The Argentines were last seen in action at the World Games, possessing a similar squad to the one seen this weekend. After going unbeaten on day 1, the Pumas were stunned in the knockout stages losing out to a resurgent Portugal side in the last four before going onto to claim a Bronze medal.

With no Santiago Gomez Cora in the team the coach knows it will be a tough test for his side at the Hage Geingob Rugby Stadium.

“The boys are very excited about the tournament ever since we have arrived here. The championship is very good, where there are four or five teams that is part of the worldwide circuit of Sevens, like South Africa, Samoa and Fiji, and in addition you are Tunisia and Portugal, teams that growing,” said Lobbe.

Meanwhile South Africa Springboks sevens coach Paul Treu indicated that he views the tournament as his first step towards defending that title.

"I have a couple of new players here and I'm keen to see if they can add value to our effort," Treu said.

Treu added that he is looking forward to a possible match-up with Fiji.

"They have beaten us in the last two finals we contested against them, so I'm eager to see how we shape up against them in the early stages of our preparation," he added.

After reading some SA RU and some Fiji RU informations there is something I do not understand. The south african team playing at Namibia is not a National Team, despite playing 10 international players and beeing coached by South Africa National Sevens Coach?? The some for Fiji, said they are playng a Barbarian side. Is this a joke or what? If South Africa does not award caps for the players, that is their internal problem. But what will the beaten teams or the winning teams, say? Have they lost against South Africa, have they won against South Africa, or against a buffoonery?
