The Central Coast is set to host the inaugural Fitness First Central Coast Sevens Rugby Tournament
in October with Sevens at its electrifying best.
The tournament being held on Saturday October 3 at Wyong Leagues Club will feature a number of clubs from the Central Coast, Sydney and Canberra premier rugby competitions.
With some other high profile tournaments, such as the Gold Coast International Sevens, also preparing for its inagural tournament it's an exciting time for the sport down under.
Some of the teams confirmed for the one day tournament include Sydney premier clubs the Gordon
Highlanders, Parramatta Two Blues, Warringah Rats and Manly Marlins.
The Coast will be represented by the Avoca Sharks, the Kariong Wanderers and The Northern Alliance, a Barbarians style team created specifically for the tournament comprising players from the four Wyong Shire based rugby clubs.
The Central Coast Rugby Union has also entered a representative team which will include five fringe and current Australian Sevens players who are participating as a hit out in the lead up to the International Rugby Board Sevens World Series. The five players have been selected by Dual International and national Sevens coach Michael O’Connor.
The Lloyd McDermott indigenous Rugby Development Team are expected to excite with former Super 12 and Sevens player Matt Sonter leading the way.
The Burwood Blues are expected to be highly competitive comprising a number of West Harbour first grade premier rugby players and having won the 2007 Hurricanes Sevens in Hawaii and the 2009 Bangkok 10’s tournament.
Another highlight of the tournament will be the participation of an invitational team playing on behalf of
tournament charity partner Hearts in Union Rugby Foundation who assists rugby players affected by
spinal injury.
The team will feature some well known names from both rugby codes including former Wallaby, St George & Roosters player Scott Gourley & Manly League legend Cliffy Lyons.
“We are excited about the very high standard of competition the tournament has attracted in its inaugural year. Sevens rugby is a highly appealing and entertaining spectacle due to the fast and furious pace of the game and the festival type atmosphere that usually surrounds rugby Sevens events," said Craig Morgan.
"This year the tournament will feature a kid’s zone with BBQ, jumping castle, mini jeeps and novelty games making the day a real family affair.
“It is confirmed that national Sevens Coach Michael O’Connor and ARU representatives will also be casting an eye over the talent and with rugby Sevens pushing for inclusion into the Olympics the tournament is a great opportunity for players to make an impression.
“This is a great opportunity to develop a major sporting event for the Central Coast Region, we hope to build the tournament into New South Wales premier rugby sevens festival, attracting teams and visitors from around the rugby world. We encourage the community to support the event by attending and enjoying a great day of electrifying rugby sevens”.
