Human Capital win RCUK Sevens

Monday 14 September 2009 (UR7s)

The second RCUK Charity Sevens was won by Human Capital in Richmond, beating Moriati Media in the final of the Trafigura Cup onThursday.

The Athletic Ground played host to the charity event spearheaded by England and Stade Francais’ flanker James Haskell in aid of the charity Demelza.

Demelza Hospice Care for Children is the only children’s residential hospice in Kent, East Sussex and South London providing a range of services to life-limited children and this year the estimated fundraising total is higher than the £100,000 raised in the inaugural tournament last year.

The tournament continued to grow and there was a mixed Touch rugby tournament that took place alongside the Sevens tournament to increase the number of participants.

“Last year I was really impressed with the standard. It was the same as today and I was really impressed with the ways the guys played. The best thing I have seen is a prop volley the ball bounce over someone’s head to score a try so it’s been good,” said the former Wasps player.

“It is a bigger event this year. We have a big screen, and we have the touch tournament as well which is pretty good so everyone in the office can play. People who say in the office that they could have played for England if they hadn’t been injured now have the opportunity to play on a Touch field.”

As part of the tournament city big hitters were able to bid for professionals to play for them, as well Guinness Premiership players to coach them throughout the day.

The victors, Human Capital were coached by Harlequins’ Nick Easter, and other stars available included recent Middlesex Sevens winners Delon and Steffon Armitage.

In the Trafigura Cup final, Nick Easter's Human Capital beat Dominic Woldouck's Moriati Media and in the Trafigura Bowl final, PriceWaterhouse Coopers, who were coached by Middlesex Sevens winning captain Paul Hodgson, beat Trafigura 1.

Trafigura were coached by British and Irish Lion Ugo Monye who felt a bit of pressure coaching the main sponsors and they came up short in the final.

Monye's Harlequins teammate Will Skinner was also present on the day and he was quick to praise the charity event.

“It is a great occasion and luckily the rain has held off. By all accounts the Sevens has been great and hopefully it will continue,” said the Harlequins skipper.

“We coached during the week and it is massively important for the charity, and more occasions and more events like this are not only good for the game but it will help charities in the area as well.”

Human Capital showed the importance of their Sevens specialist too as Stu Mackay, who has been seen on the English circuit throughout the summer, helped guide them to victory in the final.

In the Trafigura Shield and Vase, the trophies for the Touch rugby tournament, Morgan Stanley beat RCUK 2 in the Shield and Citigroup beat Lucozade in the Vase.
