Zambia women continue to improve

Monday 7 September 2009 (Zambia Times)

The Zambia women’s rugby team has won the Banc ABC regional Tri-nations Sevens tournament after defeating hosts Zimbabwe.

They triumphed 27-15 in the final and the result meant they recorded successive titles having beaten Zimbabwe 36-0 in last year’s tournament on home soil in Kitwe.

It was a good day for the Zambians as their B side also emerged victorious beating Zimbabwe B in the Plate final.

The third nation at the event was Botswana but the Zambian queens stole the show winning the two trophies at the one-day event.

Zambia Rugby Football Union (ZRFU) president Clement Sinkamba confirmed the results in an interview on Sunday and was happy with the way his country’s women’s side performed.

He said it was encouraging that the women’s team won the tournament but was not surprised by the result due to their recent form.

It is hoped, however, that these recent performances will attract a sponsor as the Zambian women’s team are still looking for one.

They are appealing to the corporate world to assist the side in continuing their development and to enable it to become more exposed by playing in as many competitions as possible.

“We believe we have got it right with the women’s team as evidenced by their performance and it’s our hope that we can find a permanent sponsor for the team,” said Sinkamba.

“It would be nice to expose the team in South Africa ahead of the international competitions because they have shown us what they can do.”
