Players named in the Digicel-sponsored Fiji sevens team for the 2009/2010 season will have to be on their best behaviour on and off the field according to head coach Iliesa Tanivula.
The Fiji squad, which includes the infamous William Ryder, is in training for the upcoming Mini Pacific Games and a new era has dawned since Tanivula took over the reins of the Sevens side at the beginning of the year from Waisale Serevi.
The good foundation built over the last few months concluded with an overall second position in the IRB Sevens Series behind South Africa but there is still room for improvement.
Despite a slow start which was surrounded by the appointment of Tanivula, the Pacific Islanders did win the Hong Kong and Scotland legs, coincidentally beating South Africa both times 26-24 and 20-19 respectively.
But the momentum is something Tanivula does not want to throw away and has set his sights to improve his winning formula.
"I want total commitment and discipline on and off the field," Tanivula said.
"Fiji needs to be known by its rugby performance on the field and not for other reasons. The teams and it players are looked up upon and are role models to the people. Hence they need to be very careful in what they do and how they act."
Tanivula said he did believe in second chances and this was a reason why William Ryder and Lepani Nabuliwaqa were named in the squad.
"We all make mistakes and should be given second chances," Tanivula said.
"However, no player should take for granted their place in the team because we will only have the best and discipline will play a big role."
Tanivula said he was trying to build a big squad so that there were no problems whenever the need arose.
"There is a need to have a big squad in place as this will help us throughout the series," he said.
