Argentina’s men and Brazil’s women lived up to their hype as overwhelming favourites wrapping up their respective titles at the South American Sevens Championships (CONSUR). Both sides went through the tournament unbeaten and rarely looked troubled all weekend at the San Jose Dos Campos stadium.

Brazil’s women domestic dominance continues making it now five years unbeaten on South American soil. The tournament was their final opportunity to test themselves in a competition environment before the World Cup in a little over a month's time. Their line wasn’t breached at all on day 1 easing to pool victories against Colombia (17-0), Peru (43-0) and Venezuela (21-0).

On day two they faced a potential semi-final banana skin in Uruguay but eventually proved too strong running out 20-5 victors to book their place in the final against the Pumas. Here the Argentines seemed to run out of steam collapsing to a 45-5 loss to a rampant Brazil.

The Puma's Men on the other hand breezed through day one with Martin Bustos and Herna Olivari in the tries as Paraguay (45-5), Colombia (45-0) and Chile (27-0) were comfortably beaten. Hosts Brazil were in their way in day 2 and a gritty game ensued with the Pumas eventually overcoming their South American rivals 17-5 with a brace of late scores.

Similarly to the women’s competition, the final proved a bit of a one sided exhibition with Argentines outfit showing power and pace in a 38-0 dispatchment of Chile.

Although the Pumas had sent a predominately second string outfit to Brazil, they looked impressive throughout and members of the squad will be hoping they have done enough to warrant World Cup selection.
