Carmarthen Warriors prepare for Aberaeron Sevens

Wednesday 26 August 2009 (UR7s)

The ever-popular Aberaeron Sevens is set to take place in Wales this weekend, with the Carmarthen Warriors looking to win the title for a third consecutive year on Sunday.

In 2007, under the leadership of former Llandovery skipper Arwel Davies, the Warriors won the final 38-17 against Bargoed.

Last year they beat Llandovery College Old Boys 28-5 and were helped by Ifan Evans. The Wales Sevens wing was in impressive form for the Kukri White Hart Marauders at the recent Middlesex Sevens and scored a brace to put the holders Harlequins out in the first round.

The Warriors have also had a busy year and have participated in many tournaments in England. They will be favourites to pull off a fine hat-trick of wins at the newly refurbished Parc Drefach on Sunday.

They reached the quarter finals at Nottingham and Bath Sevens, and the semi finals in the Manchester Open, but there are teams to threaten them.

The main challengers will be the ever-consistent Bargoed, the Fijian Fizzers who lost to the Warriors last year, made-up of serving Army soldiers, and the Legionnaires, from the north of England.

Dark horses for the tournament will be Old Breconians, who will have Worcester scrum-half Matt Powell, London Welsh wing James Strong and Lydney fly-half Craig Jones in their ranks.

With the Cwmtawe Sevens being cancelled earlier in the month this tournament is expected to draw the crowds in like the Men of Gwent Sevens did and there will be six other tournaments at the Festival of Rugby Sevens spread over Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The festival starts with an under-nines and under-11s tournament on Thursday, followed by the under-13s and under-15s on Friday, and the under-19s and ladies tournaments on Saturday.

At the open grand finale on Sunday, play starts at 10.30 with the Plate final at 17.30 and the final at 18:00.

Participating teams: Carmarthen Warriors, Kidwelly Giants, Fiji Fizzers, Bargoed, Ammanford, Llandybie, Wales Deaf VII, Aberaeron, Tregaron Titans, Burry Port, Lampeter, North of England Panthers, Pontyberem, Old Breconians, Legionnaires, Amman Utd, Furnace, Merthyr, Pentre Flamingoes.
