Thomond win third Meteor Munster Sevens

Tuesday 25 August 2009 (Munster Rugby and UR7s)

The third annual Meteor Munster Sevens took place on Saturday, with Thomond RFC being named the proud winners of the Senior Cup.

The eventual Meteor Munster Sevens champions beat another Limerick side Bruff RFC in the final, and these two all Ireland Division Two sides overcame all their AIL Division One counterparts on the day including Meteor Munster Sevens holders Garryowen RFC, and Shannon RFC respectively in the semi finals.

Youghal won the Junior Cup by beating Waterpark in an entertaining final and it was also the second year that a ladies tournament had taken place, with UL Bohemians overcoming local rivals Ballincollig to take home the silverware in the final.

John Lacey, Meteor Munster Sevens event co-ordinator said, “The Meteor Munster Sevens tournament has been a huge success and we are delighted with such a fantastic turnout. There has been great interest from all the clubs, and club coaches in particular, who are using the event to kick off the season.”

The crowd was treated to more than 70 matches this year taking place at Highfield RFC – the biggest Meteor Sevens to date – with every county in the province represented and 13 of Munster’s top clubs, including AIB League champions Shannon and the defending Meteor Munster Sevens champions in attendance.

The fact that the tournament continues to grow will only help the sport in the country, and with Ireland having to go it alone if Sevens gets into the Olympics, events like the Meteor Sevens and the Midland Sevens will only help the cause.

There were also 16 junior squads and seven ladies club teams taking to the pitches and in addition there was a host of family entertainment including a bouncy castle, a BBQ and a live DJ.

“Congratulations to the winners, and in fact all the teams who participated in the Meteor Munster Sevens tournament,” said Meteor’s Head of Communications, Amanda Carroll.

Great win for Thomond, especially as they beat the holders in the semi-finals who are in the league above them in the AIL!
