True Visions Sevens in Bangkok a success

Monday 24 August 2009 (Bangkok Post and UR7s)

Two outstanding days of action brought the True Visions Sevens Rugby Carnival to a close at the Thammasat Stadium in Rangsit, Bangkok, on Sunday.

The two days were filled with upsets across the board but all teams exposed their outstanding talent with the sport continuing to grow and the Asian Sevens Series nearing.

The first of the Asian Sevens Series takes place at the Shanghai Sevens in September before going on to other Asian venues including Brunei and Sri Lanka.

All the rugby players in Rangsit will look at tournaments such as the True Visions Sevens as a chance to showcase their skills, and with numerous age-grade categories, several of these may well have an eye on the Asian Series in the future.

In the Men’s Division One it was the more renowned side the Royal Thai Navy who maintained their superiority beating Police 12-7 in the final, leading 7-0 at the break. In Division Two, Royal Thai Army beat AIA-Thai Legend 31-5.

Bangkok University beat Thammasat University 21-7 to win the Division One Inter-University tournament, while in Division Two, Chulalongkorn beat Mae-jo University 21-12.

There was a big upset in the Under 19 competition with the favourites and schools rugby champions Kings, losing to Chulabhorn Lop Buri 19-5 in Division One, while Piyachart Patana beat Loei Pitayakom in Division Two.

Kings showed why they are seen as one of the best rugby schools in the country however as their Under 15 team beat Suravitayakhan 19-7 in Division One to return home with a trophy.

Competitions in the Women’s Open Division were just as tight as in the men’s with Bangkok PE College narrowly beating Ratanabandhit University 19-12. In Division Two RTAF team beat Mahasarakham University 24-0.

Among the schools tournaments, notable victors in the girls competitions were Wat Srichantpradith, a relatively new rugby school, who took the Under 15 Girls Division Two honours beating Pattanapracha 17-5 and in Division One, Angthong Sports School beat Phimai Vitaya 22-0.

In the girls Under 17s Nongyaphong beat Phimai Vitaya 7-3, and in the Under 19 girls event, Thammasat Klongluang took the Division Two title beating Dhonthong Vitaya 31- 0 while the Division One honours went to Phimai Vitayakom winners over Karnjanadith Vitayakom 17-7.

Asian rugby continuing to develop...will stand them in good step I imagine for 2016 if we get accepted. Looking forward to learning more about Asian Sevens Series UR7s?
