Serevi lands Papua New Guinea role

Tuesday 18 August 2009 (FBC & UR7s)

UR7s understands that Fiji legend Waisale Serevi has been installed as Papua New Guinea’s Director of 7s for the next five years.

The 7s legend signed his contract on Monday and will groom the PNG national 7s team in their quest to compete on the world stage.

Serevi hasn’t had any official coaching capacity since being unceremoniously sacked by the FRU as coach of Fiji, following a fall-out over selection.

In the interim he has played for sides such as Leeds Metropolitan at Melrose as well as also assisting the ‘Roma Seven’ side to victory in Rome back in June.

Serevi was reportedly overwhelmed with the offer and will start work next month where he will be accompanied by his family.

“I thank God for this opportunity and opening another door for me to broaden and share my 7s skills and knowledge.

“I have signed a five year contract with the PNG rugby Union to be the Director of 7s and work with the national PNG 7s team to the next 7s World Cup which will be in 2013. I start work next month and I am very happy about this new job and I will do my best.”

Serevi is expected to start work soon as he takes PNG to the Pacific Mini Games in Cook Islands next month.

Digicel Confirm Sponsorship

Cash-strapped Fiji Rugby has received a boost with the news that Digicel have confirmed an extension to sponsor the National Team after the contract expires in October.

Fiji Rugby Union Chairman Viliame Gavoka and FRU acting CEO Keni Dakuidreketi were both present for the announcement.

Viliame Gavoka also addressed the crowd saying, “This renewed sponsorship is the largest in the history of the FRU since Digicel began its sponsorship three years ago."

It will come as welcome relief for the FRU who had to rely on financial support from the IRB at the recent World Games, where Fiji retained their Gold Medal
