NS Wanderers take 46th Jonah Jones title

Tuesday 18 August 2009 (The Star)

NS Wanderers won the Super League final at the Guinness Jonah Jones Sevens tournament, beating Combined All Boys Rugby Association (COBRA) 19-7 on Sunday.

COBRA’s loss means they have now been beaten in five consecutive finals, including last year’s defeat to Borneo Eagles and they subsequently finished as runners-up at Malaysia’s oldest 7s tournament again.

Powered by six Fijians, COBRA had stamped their mark in the 46th edition of the Guinness Jonah Jones Rugby Sevens at the Royal Selangor Club in Bukit Kiara on Saturday.

They won all three of their pool matches convincingly and looked to have the momentum to walk away as champions.

However it was NS Wanderers who got off to a flyer in the final leading 7-0 at half time, and although COBRA levelled the scores just after the break, the Negri outfit scored two more tries to take the coveted trophy for the first time since 2005.

“We are happy with the win because we haven’t had the title after last winning it in 2005,” said NS Wanderers manager Fahmy Jalil.

The tournament also saw an inaugural women’s competition run concurrently, as well as the usual Club and Colts categories.

RSC Dingo won the women’s competition in a fiercely contested final, edging Singapore Black Ladies 5-0, a team they had also beaten on the first day of competition.

The first semi-final saw two of the host teams meet, with RSC Dingo beating RSC Select, before the Singapore Black Ladies beat National University of Singapore to secure their spot in the final.

In the club category, JLJ chalked up an easy 27-0 win over Bandaraya Dragons to lift the title and Bandar Penawar Sports School (BPSS) retained their title in the Colts category after defeating Shah Alam Polytechnic 33-5.
