No Surprises in early rounds at the 'Hottest 7s' in Darwin

Saturday 24 January 2009

With the first morning's play in the books in Darwin, very little has gone against the form book as the favourites have all bagged early wins. With the climate raging in the high 30s some teams could be excused for starting slowly, but the tournament has lived up to its name in weather and rugby action as the sevens has certainly not dissapointed.

Interestingly the first round of games threw up a battle of Britain, with Samurai International taking on Ronin Impact. Samurai are known throughout the world for their sevens prowess, whereas Ronin are little known outside of Ashby and Solstice 7s, where they have seen success in the past. The ULR Samurai proved to be too strong, running out 42-0 winners.

In other results we have seen wins for Serevi and his South Sea Drifters, strong fijian outfit Davetalevu, Randwick and the Hong Kong Dragons.

The second round of games followed suit this afternoon with the tournament favorites all running out strong winners against their opposition. A couple of sides though have stood out in showing some tournament winning form; The Digicel Barbarians (Samoa) are playing some great rugby and have shown that they prepared well for the 'Hottest 7s' taking part in the Punta Del Este in South America in early January. The Hong Kong Barbarians have been equally impressive with some big wins in the first couple of rounds most recently chalking up 50 points against Uprising. It's early to be talking winners of the competition with so many strong sides but these two will certainly be in the mix tomorrow on finals day.

The team at UR7s willl be working hard throughout the weekend to bring you up-to-date scores as and when they come in.
