SFGG and NOVA take Bowl and Plate

Monday 17 August 2009 (E Rugby News)

Whilst Bemont Shore took the spoils in the Cup competition at this weekend’s US Nationals it was left to SFGG and NOVA to pick up the remaining silverware in the Plate and Bowl competitions.

In the Plate Final, SFGG beat Atlanta Old White 26-21 on home soil at Treasure Island buoyed by some vocal crowd support.

Having lost in the Cup quarters to Chicago Lions 26-7 it was Atlanta who scored first, however, thanks to some great link up play between David Winiarczyk, Leslie Mango and David Ngamau who touched down under the posts.

Thretton Palamo helped restore parity, bouncing a pass to Jone Naqica and allowing the halfback to rush in on the loose ball before racing under the posts. Danny Barrett then demonstrated a good turn of pace to run into the corner to make the half-time score 12-7.

Seta Palamo finished off a fine SFGG move when all players had played a part in the build up early in the second-half, but Atlanta would not lie down and Caleb Tanui crossed to set up an enthralling finale.

T.Palamo was once again the provider for SFGG, setting up Andrea Asquega for their fourth try and this proved too much for Old White despite Richard Kanda scoring his sides third late on.

In the semi-finals Atlanta Old White beat Life University 19-5 and SFGG ended Denver’s hopes – who will be disappointed to lose both their matches on Day 2 having gone unbeaten on Day 1 – 24-14.

In the Bowl Final, NOVA overcame their obvious disappointment in missing out on the Cup due to points difference with a 2-1 record in the pool stages, to defeat Boston 26-7.

The Mid-Atlantic side won thanks to their defence, and Hamish Smales scored the opener before Josh Stallings blitzed a Boston scrum to score their second try.

In the second half Stalling scored again, this time after PJ Komongnan went on a long, weaving run. Just as Komongnan had every Boston player looking at him, he offloaded to an onrushing Stallings for the try.

Anwar Salaam raced in for the fourth and Derrick Wavomba’s try for the North-Easter side was nothing but a consolation for Boston.

With the quarter-finals taking place on Saturday (NOVA beat Milwaukee 42-7 and Boston overcame Glendale 26-14) the semi-finals saw OMBAC and Schuylkill River stand in the way. NOVA proved too much for OMBAC 15-7 however, and Boston held firm against River 26-7.

For NOVA it was bittersweet and they ended with a 5-1, the same as Aspen, only bettered by Belmont Shore who ended the weekend 6-0. All players will now look ahead to next weekend’s All-Star Championship and will wait to see if they get a call-up.
