Buccaneers prepare for inaugural Midland Sevens

Thursday 13 August 2009 (UR7s)

The inaugural Midland Sevens rugby tournament will take place on Saturday at the home of Buccaneers RFC, Dubarry Park, Athlone in Ireland.

The hosts, who play in the AIB League, will host a minimum of eight teams, primarily from Connacht and the Midlands, but teams from outside this catchment area are also likely to participate.

Lying on the River Shannon, Dubarry Park will also host a women’s Sevens tournament that will run concurrently, with both tournaments providing a good platform for players nearing the start of the 15-a-side campaign.

The Buccaneers are in Division 1B following a restructure of the AIB League and begin their league campaign away at Young Munster on October 3. The main aim of the inaugural Midland Sevens is to test the fitness and team spirit levels of all the teams participating ahead of the season.

The Buccaneers were only formed in 1994 but already have a rich tradition with rugby thanks to successive promotions from Division 3 to Division 1 in the late 90's.

Now, with the growth of Rugby Sevens, Buccaneers are the latest team to get involved and to host a tournament - the Midland 7s.
