Springbok coach Paul Treu has spelled out to his young side that thay must be consistent in the next two legs of the IRB Sevens World Series — in Wellington and San Diego.
Faced with absentees due to injury and selections for South Africa's Super 14 Clubs, Treu will yet again let his youngsters cut their teeth on the world stage.
"What we need now is for them to show consistency — and to take even more responsibility in the absence of the seniors."
"Frankie Horn, Renfred Dazel and Mpho Mbiyozo will, however, be ready for the next two tournaments after recovering from injury, and so will Philip Snyman”, added Treu speaking to Iafrica.
Last season’s captain Neil Powell has only just resumed training after a broken hand, and Marius Schoeman will also not be ready for the next two tournaments.
The loss of MJ Mentz, Stefan Basson, Schalk van der Merwe, Kabamba Floors, Danwell Demas, Fabian Juries and Jonathan Mokuena has cost the Boks plenty of talent and experience. Although the Boks have flown out the blocks this season they will face fierce competition for the rest of the series from Fiji and New Zealand, both possessing settled and mature squads.
"I'm quite frustrated. We've had no game time yet," said Treu about their preparations since returning from their holiday break — they face a series of training matches over the next 10 days as preparation.
"We simply have to set our own standards," he said philosophically.
The team departs for Wellington on January 30 where they are pitted against Kenya, Scotland and Tonga in the pool stages of the tournament on February 6 and 7.
The following weekend Australia, the United States and Canada will test the top-seeded Springboks in the pool stages of the San Diego tournament.
The Springboks, on 40 points, are 12 ahead of perennial series winners New Zealand after the first two of eight tournaments in the 2008/09 IRB Sevens World Series.
