Cwmtawe 7s cancelled

Thursday 30 July 2009

This weekend’s Cwmtawe Sevens has been cancelled due to the bad weather making the pitches unplayable. A statement on their website read:

"As a result of the heavy and persistent rainfall throughout the month of July, that has accentuated in the recent week and following a pitch inspection by Neath Port Talbot CBC and the tournament referees, the Cwmtawe 7s have been advised that the tournament pitches are currently not playable.

In addition, there is a requirement for heavy vehicles to traverse the fields to facilitate marquees, toilets, fencing, sound systems, catering, refrigerated vehicles with cold drinks etc and this is not possible with the ground in its current condition. The tournament is therefore not viable.

With more rain forecast for Friday July 31st & Saturday August 1st the Cwmtawe 7s has reluctantly no option but to cancel the tournament for the first time in its history.

Whilst we are all disappointed with this outcome, we can assure all affected parties that the tournament will be back at Parc Ynysderw, Pontardawe, Swansea on Saturday August 7th 2010."

It’s particularly disappointing for the likes of Samurai and the British Army who were very much looking forward to the weekend. Samurai were set to enter a special Welsh Samurai team – in memory to Colin Hillman, a great servant to sevens rugby who passed away on July 2.

The tournament, alongside Hong Kong, was Colin Hillman's favourite event and it is fitting that a side has been entered in his name and were to be coached by Wales World Cup Seven coach Paul John.

The Army, the defending champions here, were using the tournament as their final warm up before the Middlesex Sevens, with skipper Mark Lee promising to bring his strongest squad possible.
