Tomasi Cama leading Borneo Eagles to Jonah Jones

Thursday 30 July 2009 (Malaysia Daily Express and UR7s)

Malaysia's Borneo Eagles from Sandakan Rugby Club again proved their prowess emerging champions in the Club Open category of the inaugural Sabah Sevens tournament over the past weekend.

It was another feather to their cap, as the Eagles were also recently crowned national champions when they captured the Malaysia Rugby Union Super League Cup in Kuala Lumpur. They will be looking to further their fortunes this season when they head to the Guinness Jonah Jones Sevens tournament on August 15.

The Borneo Eagles are the defending champions there, causing a lot of upsets along the way last year. Powered by several Fijians they beat the previous holders Hong Kong Dragons 25-12 and two time champions NS Wanderers 17-12 in the pool stages, before beating Cobra 29-0 in the final.

Perhaps most influential in the success of the Borneo Eagles, who only formed in 2004, is one particular Sevens stalwart, Tomasi Cama.

The 48 year old Fijian legend, now coaches the side and was also named the man of the tournament in this year's Super League. He a name for himself winning the Hong Kong 7s in 1990, 1991 and 1992 and when he was the assistant coach of the Fiji Sevens side that won the World Cup in 1997, which was also in Hong Kong. His son, Tomasi Cama Jnr, plays for New Zealand and has scored 174 points on the IRB Sevens Series this season.

Fielding five of their nine current Malaysian national players, the Eagles soared to a 33-7 win over surprise finalists SM Teknik Keningau, a team of 18 year-olds who had earlier stunned the same Eagles side 17-15 in the preliminary rounds.

OSCA (KK) clinched third place by defeating the SRC Development Team 19-12 and with the Guinness Jonah Jones Sevens tournament, the biggest and most historical Sevens event in Malaysia, just around the corner, the Eagles will surely be buoyed by this victory heading into the defence of their title.
