The British Army continued their superb season by retaining their Worthing Sevens crown at the weekend overcoming Terry Butler's talented McCallum Scorpions 36-12 in a largely one-sided final.
With both sides unbeaten going into the day’s finale there arguably wasn’t too much between the sides, but it was the Army who flew out the traps thanks to tries from the experienced Maika 'Bunny' Burenivalu and new find Rokomatu to go three tries up.
The Scorpions finally responded before the half was up through Paul Jarvis, who impressed all day with quick feet and pace. But with the Scorpions starved of possession and a few calls from officials not going their way, Terry Butler’s side struggled to impose themselves in the second half.
Former Scottish Captain Mark Lee provided valuable link work all day and was supported by the lively Gerhard Wessels. With Rokoduguni getting in onthe act and a try from Wessels effectively sealed yet another Invitational Cup win for the Army.
"We’ve come here for a few years now and it’s great to defend our title again," said Lee who captained the side.
"We’ve used today as an opportunity to look at some players, especially forwards, for Middlesex Sevens, as we have been back heavy thus far this season. I think we’ve found a couple and look forward to taking a really strong team to Cwmtawe 7s next weekend," added Lee.
The Invitational event consisted of an original Pool Competition with the four bottom sides heading to Plate Semi-Finals.
The remaining 6 teams went to two further groups of three with the winners of each group going straight into the final.
The Army comfortably overran the Glantaff Goats 36-7 and again proved too strong for Adam Hurst’s Apache. Hurst’s side, which included a blend of youngsters and experienced campaigners such as Scott Lowden, Will Woodward, and Blackheath’s James Tirrell, have still never beaten the Army but with a convincing win over the Goats secured second place in the group and a satisfying day’s work.
The Scorpions passage to the final was less straight forward edging a talented Templars team at the death 26-21 with tries from Austen Howells, Paul Jarvis, Joe Ojuwa, and Martin Freeman proving enough. Ojuwa was on the scoresheet again against the Black Knights with Kiba Richards also going over to book their spot in the final.
It was a good day for the Armed Services, with the Navy taking the Invitational Plate whilst Withern Elves were triumphant in the Open.
The Navy proved too strong for a young Marauders Academy side in the final. The Academy, with a strong influx of London Irish Academy players, started well with an opportunist score from Mike Channing. But it was the Navy who ran away with things from then on, thanks to tries from Aaron Humphreys, Johnny Stephens, and a brace from Iffi proving decisive in the 39-7 win.
In the Open Competition, the Withern Elves put in a dominant performance, emphasised in their 50-5 win over Worthing in the Semi-Final. Spencer Street Suaves, who despite losing to Brighton in the Pool Stages, returned strongly to eventually book their place in the final. But it was Withern Elves who were too strong cruisng to a 48-7 with Rich Kay, Chris Hamp, and Andy Rogers all scoring.
