New Zealand coach Gordon Tietjens has announced his training squad ahead of round three of the IRB Sevens World Series in Wellington. Tietjens sprung little surprises when revealing a typically experienced 17-man squad for the Kiwis vital domestic leg, according to Yahoo Extra Sport.
Waikato's Save Tokula is the only newcomer to the squad, with North Harbour's Viliame Waqaseduadua and Wellington's Tu Umaga Marshall making comebacks to the squad. Waqaseduadua last played in Singapore in 2005 and Marshall in Hong Kong in 2006, with sevens guru Tietjens once again appearing to favour consistency and sevens experience at the nucleus of his squad.
"The training camp was very competitive and all the boys challenged for positions," Tietjens said
"We have a lot of exciting young players coming through which looks very healthy for New Zealand rugby," the coach added.
The squad will again be captained by 2008 IRB and New Zealand Sevens Player of the Year DJ Forbes.
The squad will eventually be trimmed down to 12 for the New Zealand leg of the IRB Sevens, in Wellington on February 6 and 7
"Wellington is always a huge tournament for the fans and the team really enjoy playing at home. We are currently second on the World Series table and need to win in Wellington to claw back a few points from South Africa who are currently leading the series," Tietjens said.
New Zealand are currently lying in second place in the series behind South Africa and will be looking to make up valuable ground with a rowdy home crowd behind them.
New Zealand: Tomasi Cama (Manawatu), Edwin Cocker (Auckland), DJ Forbes (Captain, Counties Manukau), Paul Grant (Otago), Nigel Hunt (Wellington), Solomon King (Bay of Plenty), Zar Lawrence (Bay of Plenty), Tim Nanai Williams (Counties Manukau), Tim Mikkelson (Waikato), Lote Raikabula (Manawatu), Willie Rickards (Southland), Julian Savea (Wellington), Save Tokula (Waikato), Chad Tuhoro (Counties Manukau), Nafi Tuitavake (North Harbour), Tu Umaga Marshall (Wellington), Viliame Waqaseduadua (North Harbour).
