A Trinidad and Tobago Sevens Series is expected to be launched early in 2010. The five tournament series, which has been sanctioned by the Trinidad and Tobago Rugby Football Union (TTRFU), will take the fast paced and exciting sevens rugby format to various venues around Trinidad and Tobago.

Although created for local rugby clubs, it is expected that there will be interest from international, regional and touring rugby clubs to participate, with points being awarded during each tournament with the overall winner to be crowned Trinidad and Tobago Sevens Series champions.

According to Brian Lewis, the former TTRFU secretary and the driving force behind the series, the objective of this series is to raise the profile of rugby in Trinidad and Tobago by carrying 7s throughout the country and giving local clubs and players the opportunity to engage in and diversify rugby’s community and participation base.

"I believe the series will develop new fans and discover new talent. It will be a challenge given the current economic environment, but the intention is to be innovative in the marketing and promotion of the series in an effort to secure corporate partners, media and fan interest. It will not be easy in the beginning but it will happen,” said Lewis.

The plan also includes prize money for the winning clubs and while it is not anticipated that foreign clubs will be available for the entire series there will be limited spots available for foreign clubs who wish to play in single tournaments.

The concept will be developed as a community and family oriented event with entertainment and other activities intended to capture the interest of children, youths and adults and we look forward to welcoming Trinidad and Tobago to hosting a Sevens tournament.
