Old Blue and NOVA take New Jersey and Rocky Gorge 7s

Monday 20 July 2009 (eRugbyNews)

Old Blue won the New Jersey 7s in Princeton NJ, to take the last qualifying tournament in the North East.

Old Blue and NYAC I both remained unbeaten in the pool stages, with Old Blue defeating NYAC II 43-0 and Long Island 31-7, and NYAC I recording 34-12 and 33-17 victories over White Plains and Morris.

After the pool stages, Morris just made it into the semis thanks to a tight 12-10 defeat over White Plains and Long Island defeated NYAC II to ensure a top four finish.

In the play-offs the gulf between the top teams started to became more obvious, with a series of big wins.

White Plains completed a 25-0 victory over NYAC II to take 5th spot before the semi finals saw Old Blue whitewash Morris 34-0 and NYAC I put Long Island to the sword 47-0 to set up an enthralling final.

Prior to the final Morris defeated Long Island by forfeit for third before comfortably the most exciting match of the day took place with both sides playing with an impressive high tempo. Old Blue eventually took the spoils, however, with a 38-29 victory over NYAC I.

Old Blue now join NYAC and Mystic in the North East territorial championship. More teams qualify based on points, with Boston, second in both Mystic and Springfield, also expected to qualify.

In the Open Division, Bayonne defeated Princeton 14-12 in the final.

Nova peaking at right time

NOVA enter the Mid-Atlantic 7s championship next week as the top seed, having won the third and final territorial qualifier Saturday at Rocky Gorge. This is on the back of their first win of the season at the Energy Sevens last week.

NOVA defeated PAC 35-12 in the semi-finals to make it to the championship match where they met Schuylkill River from Philadelphia who had defeated Charlotte 26-10 in their own last four clash.

Yet it was NOVA who proved too strong in the final, recording a 19-7 victory which leaves them with easily the most points in the Mid-Atlantic 7s standings. Schuylkill River are second, Charlotte third, PAC fourth and they are followed by Washington, Wilmington and Maryland.

With one week of qualifications still to take place with territorial tournaments this weekend, the brackets for the 2009 National Club 7s Championships currently look like this after this weekends tournaments.
