Boost for Women's Rugby in Malaysia

Thursday 16 July 2009 (Malaysia Star)

Women’s rugby in Malaysia received another boost with an inclusion into a major tournament, the Guinness Jonah Jones Rugby Sevens.

The Royal Selangor Club’s Rugby chief, Richard Dutton, said that it was part of their continuous effort to develop the sport in Malaysia.

“We formed the first women’s team last year, the RSC Dingoes, and participation among women is fast increasing,” he said yesterday.

The tournament, which will be held on Aug 15 and 16 at the club grounds in Bukit Kiara, will have four other categories of competition — super league, clubs, colts and the heavyweights.

The colts category will feature 16 Under-21 teams while the heavyweights will have teams with players who are 35 years and above or weigh 100kg and above.

“As for the super league, only international or professional outfits will be allowed to participate and eight teams, including Malaysia’s national team, have confirmed participation thus far,” said Dutton.

“For the women’s competition, we have two confirmed entries from Malaysia and Singapore and we expect to hear from Thailand and Laos soon to make a four-team group.”

Dutton said the RSC Dingoes, having competed in the Singapore League, should put up a strong challenge in the tournament.

He added that the Jonah Jones 7s would continue to be the premier development championship in the region.

“We have received suggestions to take the event a step higher but we feel that keeping the status as a development championship is in line with the original objective, which is to enable everyone and anyone to play the sport,” he said.

Last year saw top Fiji Sevens player Lepani Nabuliwaqa turn out for NS Wanderers in the super league.
