Hong Kong welcomes new coach for World Games

Tuesday 14 July 2009 (HKRFC & UR7s)

Next Weekend’s World Games will be the first major test for new Hong Kong Head Coach Dai Rees. Rees and the rest of his management team have been working hard for the Kaosiung event which also provide ideal preparation for the East Asian Games in December. Rees replaced former coach Rod McIntosh.

“It will be a great pleasure working with the current coaching team to further develop the national Sevens game within Hong Kong. It is important we develop a balanced combination of players within the team,” said Rees.

“The game at the elite level requires a combination and balance of individual player skills to compliment team performance. A successful team will always have a combination of game controllers, ball winners, and finishers. Moving forward it is important that we look to develop more forwards into our Sevens teams.”

The training squad has a familiar look to with the likes of Keith Robertson and Rowan Varty. The likes Kwok Ka Chun, Simon Leung, Mark Komar and Ben Ho, make up the forwards. The squad is a good blend of experienced internationals and youth, all of which are Asian Games qualified.

The squad will give So Hok Ken, Mark Komar, Yiu Kam Shing, Adam Raby, Ben Ho, Charles Chueng and Gavin Hadley the opportunity to launch their international Sevens careers, while Ricky Cheuk, Kwok Ka Chun and Tsang Hing Hung will be looking to impress in the build up to the East Asian Game after a period away from the Sevens game.

Three additional development players have also been invited to train with the squad, Kenith Hsieg, Lawrence Ho and Ming Fai Tang.

“Due to the late notice of the World Games and with players out of season it will be a difficult tournament for the us. However, we will have a 3-week training period prior to the tournament with the competition being used to develop our players. They will be playing against some of the top Sevens nations in the world. This can only provide invaluable experience for all our players in the build up of the EAG and beyond,” added Rees.
