USA Sevens in potential move to Las Vegas

Monday 13 July 2009 (E Rugby News)

USA Sevens, LLC has reportedly signed a letter of intent with Las Vegas Events that would place the USA Sevens Rugby Tournament at the Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 13-14th 2010.

The new relationship will be a multi-year commitment and replaces the San Diego tournament.

The USA Sevens is the North American stop on the IRB Sevens World Series and features 16 of the elite international rugby sevens teams including: New Zealand, England, Argentina, Australia and Fiji, plus the USA Eagles and Series champions South Africa.

The tournament is the fourth round in the 2009/2010 IRB Sevens World Series and teams will feature 44 matches over the weekend.

“As the premier rugby event in America, we are excited to showcase this competition in Las Vegas” said Ray Peterson, managing director of the USA Sevens.

“Home to the world’s most celebrated hotels and renowned entertainment destinations, the electrifying atmosphere of Las Vegas complements the dynamic Sevens experience and is a perfect fit with the tournament’s international appeal.”

Headquartered in Orangeburg, NY, USA Sevens LLC owns and operates the USA Sevens Rugby Tournament. Held annually, the event is one of the eight international stops in the IRB Sevens World Series.

Sam Boyd Stadium is the home of the UNLV football team and seats 36,800 fans. The multi-purpose facility also has a large grass area just outside where teams can warm up and then immediately enter the stadium. The stadium surface will be changed to grass for the USA Sevens event.
