Denver Barbarians take home 7s tournament and place in Championship Finals

Sunday 12 July 2009 (UR7s)

The Denver Barbarians won the Denver 7s, taking the third leg of the USA 7s Championship Series and also the second of the West RFU 7s Qualifiers.

Continuing their recent dominance on home soil the Barbarians early season promise looks to of made them one of the favorites for the US nationals. Denver finished 4th at Nationals last season after losing in the semi-finals, so the 38-12 win here over reigning champs, The Gents of Aspen, was all the sweeter.

Denver defeated Glendale in the semis 17-5, while Aspen took down the Dallas Harlequins 24-14 to make the final.

In the championship match, Denver overwhelmed Aspen 38-12. It was a repeat of the first West qualifier, where Denver won over Aspen in the final. However, that game was much closer but as can happen so often in 7s things went right for Denver early as they were able to get ahead and then put the opposition away with solid play for the rest of the game.

Both Denver and Aspen also qualify for the final tournament of the USA 7s Championship Series to be held around the USA 7s IRB tournament in February. They join Belmont Shore, OMBAC, Life and NOVA in the final tournament.

Final: Denver 38 Aspen 12
3rd/4th : Glendale over Dallas Harlequins
5th/6th Chicago Lions over Kansas City Blues
7th/8th Barbarians B 20 Excilios Selectos 19

Chicago Lions will not be please with their 5th place result, they had travelled a long way to try and qualify for the Championship Series in Feb but were unable to make the semi-finals, it will be budget dependant if they have another go at qualification in Kansas in 2 weeks.

In the Social bracket Glendale Bs won, while Aurora took the U19 boys bracket.

There are 2 more qualifiers for the Championship series finals in San Diego in Feb with the next one taking place in Kansas City on the weekend of July 25th and then a break until New York on November 28th.

Denver and Aspen will now only have eyes for US Nationals and in present form it looks like the Barbarians can reverse the results from last year.
