Richmond’s Amy Turner has been called up to the England Womens 7s squad to compete in this weekend’s European 7s at Hanover in Germany.
Turner, who was a reserve player for England in this year’s IRB Rugby World Cup 7s, replaces Darlington Mowden Parks’ Georgina Roberts who has had to withdraw through injury. England will be coached by former England international Susie Appleby and Barry Maddocks, RFUW Club and Coach Officer.
England are top seeds for the championship and have been drawn against Spain, France, Sweden and Portugal in their pool. Other teams competing are the Netherlands, Russia, Italy, Sweden, Moldova and hosts Germany. Despite not playing togeter since the World Cup a number of the team have been playing at tournaments such as Kinsale and Amsterdam, keeping them in the 7s groove.
This weekend’s Hannover Sevens will provide another showpiece for the women's game, in what has already been a big year for the sport. With strides already taken, such as the hugely successful inagurual Women’s Rugby World Cup Sevens in March 2009, the Hanover tournament will again give some much required momentum to the game.
"I saw the women compete at the World Cup in Dubai and was very impressed by the standard of women's Sevens and I'm confident that our tournament will provide it with another milestone," said event organiser Achim Behring-Scheil.
