Fiji hoping win can lift nation after flooding

Tuesday 20 January 2009 (Fiji Times)

Fiji have set out their stall to win the next legs of the IRB Sevens World Series in Wellington and San Diego, in dedication to the victims of flooding around their country.

The recent severe storms, coming in from the Pacific Ocean, have devastated the rugby loving nation of Fiji. Hundreds of homes and businesses in towns and villages on the main island of Viti Levu have been inundated in waist-deep water from overflowing rivers and streams. Clean drinking water is scarce in some places, and stagnant water increases the risk of exposure to mosquito-borne diseases like malaria and respiratory illness.

Fiji coach and sevens great Waisale Serevi said a win would ease a little of the pain the victims had been going through, according to Fiji Times. The sevens stars paid a visit to the evacuation centre at the Burebasaga District Primary School.

"When the children at Burebasaga District School saw us, they were really happy," Serevi said.

"We discussed while travelling back to camp that we need to win the next leg of IRB tournaments for them and the boys agreed." Serevi said it was an emotional moment for the players and team officials to see the suffering of the people.

"The players were touched with what they saw. They have suffered a lot and it is our turn to make them happy. It is really difficult for the small children.”
