NYAC take the Springfield Rugby Sevens

Springfield, Mass. - The New York Athletic Club won the season’s first Northeast RFU National Club Sevens Qualifier, defeating the Boston Rugby Club 22-14 in the final of the Springfield Rugby Club’s Eric White Memorial Sevens.

While eight teams originally signed up for the Springfield qualifier, only five actually took the field. The five teams played round-robin rugby and the two teams with the best records met in the final.

In pool play the New York AC defeated Long Island 17-0, the Boston Irish Wolfhounds 31-7, and Albany 26-0, while losing to Boston 10-7.

Boston went undefeated in pool play, defeating Albany 17-5, NYAC 10-7, Boston Irish 22-5 and Long Island 28-5.

At the end of pool play, the NYAC defeated Boston for the Championship.

Old Blue and second sides from Long Island and the NYAC were late withdrawals in the Qualifier Division.

In addition to the Qualifier, the Springfield 7s had three other divisions.

The South Shore Anchors took the six-team Men’s Open Division with a 21-12 win over the Boston RFC in the final. New Haven won the ten-team Men’s Social Division over the Dartmouth Alumni. Albany was champion of the 12 team Women’s Division, defeating North Shore 43-0 in the final.

Dave Delcourt of the Boston Rugby Club was awarded the Eric White Sportsmanship Award, while Albany ’s Willow Eyres was named MVP of the Women’s Division.
