Schuylkill River Win Battlefield Rugby Sevens

Monday 22 June 2009

Schuylkill River dismantled NOVA in the final of NOVA’s Battlefield Sevens on Saturday in Virginia.

Schuylkill won the six-team Premier Division competition. They beat beating Wilmington and Washington in pool play but lost to NOVA in the preliminaries. They got past PAC 42-12 in the semis to reach the final, where they showcased some excellent team play to win 28-5. NOVA, who have seen a long list of high profile players unavailable due to national team call-ups and injuries, emerged from their pool unbeaten. They then edged past Wilmington 19-14 in the semis.

Wilmington have been working on developing some young players and those players are emerging. The club defeated PAC in the 3rd/4th game. It was something of a bizarre day for Wilmington, as they emerged from pool play win-less. However they didn’t lose all that many, either, losing 15-10 to Schuylkill before drawing with PAC and Maryland, 14-14 the score in both games.

In the 10-team Women's division NOVA I ran all over their competition on their way to the final. The Maryland Exile Women played a very scrappy style to fight their way into the final, but NOVA’s experience won out 28-5.

The Open bracket saw a mixture of competitive and social sides playing, with half the teams looking to acquire points towards the MARFU Tier two championship. Three of the four teams in the semi-finals were teams looking for some silverware at the end of season – a Norfolk-area team dubbed “Team Fun” was, not surprisingly, just there to have a good time.

Severn River downed Team Fun in the semis, while Richmond Grey went down to Schuylkill II. Schuylkill showed they had strength in depth as they won the Open Final 28-21.

Tournament MVPs
Men's Premiere: Dan Wright - Schuylkill River
Men's Open: Ben Reilley - Schuylkill River
Women's: Dominique Bunai - MDX Women

The tournament was assisted by NOVA Pain and Rehab, which supplied trainers for the tournament.

The tournament victory means Schuylkill River has confirmed a spot in the Mid-Atlantic championship tournament. NOVA need to keep accumulating points, and lead the standings with 8 points (because they won more games at the Battlefield 7s) with Schuylkill at 7.
