Big guns into the Quarters in Nairobi for the Safari Sevens

Sunday 21 June 2009 (Safari Sevens, UR7s)

The Safari Sevens reaches its final day today (Sunday) and it's the knockouts of the main competition that will take centre stage at Ngong road. All of the seeds made the quarter-finals including the Chairman's Select, who, as the 3rd tiered team entered by the Kenyan RFU, caused the upset of Day One when they convincingly beat Samoa in the group stages.

Here is a brief preview of the quarter-final action from the Safari Sevens.

Zimbabwe v Samurai

These two sides have been faithfully taking part in the Tusker Safari Sevens over the years. Zimbabwe won this tourney in 2000 and were losing finalists in 2006 and 2007. Samurai, the 1998 losing finalists, are no pushovers either. This match should keep the fans glued to their seats. Kick off 12.00pm (local time).

Emerging Boks v Grenoble

Emerging Boks were losing finalists in 2003 and 2004. They won the tourney in 2006 and 2007 and should not be counted out. Grenoble should give the Emerging Boks a run for their money. Kick off 12.20pm (local time).

Samoa v Raiders

Samoa won the 2005 edition on their maiden appearance with a 52-0 demolition job of South Africa’s Western Province. Will they rise to the occasion when they face South African opposition in the form of Hamilton Radiers? Find out at 12.40 pm (local time).

Kenya v Chairman’s Select

Pool A winners Kenya play Pool B runners up Chairman’s Select, who are incidentally Kenyan. This makes for an exciting clash for a number of reasons.

Both sets of players know each other very well as it is this pool of players from both sides who have formed the core of the all-conquering Kenya squad that finished sixth overall in the 2008/2009 IRB Sevens World Series. Having beaten Samoa convincingly in their pool match, Chairman’s Select will be out to prove a point against their more established colleagues playing for Kenya. This makes it a must watch match. Kick off 11.40am (local time).

The Bowl Quarter Finals will be competed by:

(all times are local time)

Japan v Uganda : 10.00am

Bristol v Morocco: 10.20am

Shujaa v Zambia: 10.40am

Les Bleu Sevens v Tanzania: 11.00am
