Widden Old boys hosted their 6th annual rugby sevens competition on Saturday 13th June amidst glorious sunshine to help make the day its usual success.
16 teams took part in the contest after several clubs struggled to field teams at the final hour. The pool stages were a varied bunch of games with some displays of excellent running rugby from the seeded teams Dursley, Chosen Hill, Widden Old Boys and Hollywood 7s down to the rough and ready games played between some of the social teams entered.
At the end of the pool stages, the Cup qualifiers were Widden, Dursley, Hucclecote, Kingswood Warriors, Hollywood 7s, Gordon League, Drybrook and Gloucester Old Boys. Whilst Piggy’s All Blacks, Club Sponsor DLS Lions, Kingswood Spartans, Gloucester Civil Service, Dowty, Old Richians, Ross on Wye and Chipping Sodbury contested the Plate competition.
The plate final was reached after some nail biting finishes between DLS and Old Richians as well as Chipping Sodbury vs Kingswood in the earlier stages. Piggy’s All Blacks played Kingswood in the Plate Final with the All blacks coming out as victors, retaining their plate from 2008. Special mention should go to Pete Thomas, usually a football player but dons his rugby boots for us on one day a year and oozes class.
In the Cup competition, Hucclecote knocked out Hollywood 7s in a tight game with 2 chip and chases from Reuben Haile, whilst Dursley destroyed all in their path. The final was between Dursley and newly promoted Chosen Hill and was the first game in which Dursley’s mainly under 20 county squad were close to being contained.
Final results
Cup Winners: Dursley
Cup Runners Up: Chosen Hill
Plate Winners: Piggy’s All Blacks
Plate Runners Up: Kingswood
Gluebag Award: Rikki Hill of DLS lions (for a 20 yard run up to a fight and bottling it.)
Widden Old boys host 2 tournaments each summer and the organisers are looking forward to welcoming the larger 7s players in the UK to their Fatboy Sevens in July.
