Home club CRA Portuense took home the annual El Puerto Sevens at the weekend getting past the match fancied home side Wiss the Mama 26-14 in the final of the ‘Gold’ competition. Wiss the Mama, a Madrid based side, were expected to fair well at the tournament after a strong showing in Amsterdam earlier this season, with the likes of Fafi Lazaro particularly impressing. But buoyed on a large home support it was Portuense who held their nerve to deservedly take home the title with the pacey Jose de la Cueva causing most of their damage.
The CRA Portuense "B" side took the ‘Silver’ competition too edging out a very talented a Portugese side, Cascais, 10-7 in a gripping encounter. Worcester Wanderers won in the Bronze Final beating Yesterday United 17-7.
The obvious standout player of the tournament was the Portugese veteran Nuno Durao playing for Cascais. Having established himself as one of the best Portugese players of all time before retiring back in 1996, Durao impressed all afternoon.
Kamikaze win Flanders 10s
Koru Kamikaze continued their successful season by winning the Flanders Tens at the weekend. They beat an impressive Scottish team 'Howe of Fife' in the final by 6 tries. The Scots had earlier impressed in stopping the ‘Godfathers’ in a closely fought semi-final. The Godfathers had earlier beaten Kamikaze in Pool Stages as well as a range of quality international sides in Marq en Barouel & Diok Leiden.
