Prepared Fiji aiming to finish IRB World Sevens Series strongly

Tuesday 19 May 2009 (Fiji Times)

Fiji Sevens coach Iliesa Tanivula is confident his team will do well in the last two legs of the 2008/2009 IRB Sevens World Series this month in London and Edinburgh.

With some of their best preparation so far this season thanks to a series of warm up games and intensive conditioning, Tanivula is confident the Fijians can build on the success of their performances in Hong Kong and Adelaide.

"The boys have trained well during the two weeks camp with all focus on these two tournaments," Tanivula said.

"Even though this is the last leg, we still have to do well. The London and Scotland tournaments are very important in our quest in the IRB Series. The boys have done their part and all is left now is the support from the nation."

The Fijians bring a Strong squad to Europe with the likes of Pio Tuwai, James Brown, Nasoni Roko, Niumaia Cakacaka, and player of the tournament in Hong Kong, Emosi Vucago all looking in menacing form.

“We are able to use these games (training) to see where we are in terms of fitness, combinations,” added the Coach.

"I was quite happy with the standard of fitness of the boys during the two weeks camp and I believe this will have a positive effect in our campaign in London and Scotland."

Another feature the coaching staff have made a big effort to improve on in the last few months is the Fijian’s discipline, according to Manger Alifereti Malo.

"One of the things we are trying to establish with this team is the discipline, so if you look at the stats the number of red or yellow cards has gone down drastically. It just the boys and you have got to maintain the discipline,” said Malo.

Malo is also looking forward to seeing what new recruit Jiuta Lutumailagi can bring to the squad with his vast sevens experience.

"The coach is running with what he knows, Jiuta brings in a lot of experience having played at the provincial level for Nadroga and had an overseas stint. He's got what it takes to be in the team. He can play at the halfback's position or at flyhalf as he is a very good kicker,” added Malo.

Fiji find themselves in a very competitive Pool C in London with Kenya, USA and Scotland in their way on Day 1 of the competition.
