Thom Evans and Ally Hogg give Scotland big boost

Wednesday 13 May 2009

Scotland have been massively boosted for the remaining two legs of the IRB Sevens World Series with the inclusion of speedster Thom Evans and veteran flanker Ally Hogg, both full Scotland internationals. The rest of the squad has a familiar look to it with regular captain Scott Forrest leading the side with the likes of Andrew Turnbull, Mike Adamson, Jim Thompson, and Rugby League convert Hefin O’Hare all set to feature.

Evans - touted as a potential Lions tourist - will be a welcome addition to Stevie Gemmell’s squad with the Scots often lacking stardust and genuine pace out wide.

“There's no substitute for out-and-out pace and to have a player the calibre of Thom Evans is fantastic. Couple that with the likes of Hefin O'Hare and Andrew Turnbull and we've got some of the fastest players in Scotland available,” said Gemmell.

Delighted to be back involved in the sevens set-up which proved to be a springboard to full international honours, Evans added:

"My first taste of rugby on the world stage came in sevens and I can't wait to be involved with Stevie and the squad once again.

"Sevens is one of the best spectacles in world rugby and it suits my game down to a tee. I love the pace the game is played at as well as the fitness aspect.

"Competition in London and Edinburgh is very strong because there are some exciting teams taking part. I've confidence in the squad announced today and believe that we can challenge anyone out there."

Thom’s older brother and fellow international, Max, was also set to join the sevens squad again but suffered knee ligament damage against the Ospreys last weekend in the Magners League.
