South Africa's dominant Sevens Rugby team will head for the 2009 World Games in Koashuing in July as one favourites to take the gold medal after announcing a full strength squad for the competition.
Runaway leaders of the IRB Sevens circuit, and fresh from victory in Adelaide, Australia, headline acts such Mpho Mbiyozo, Mzwandile Stick, Gio Aplon, Neil Powell, Robert Ebersohn and Renfred Dazel are all set to be in Taiwan.
The Boks should start as strong favourites to take the gold medal, which is currently held by Fiji after they won the last event in Duisburg, Germany in 2005.
The tournament marks another important step for rugby in its push for acceptance at the 2016 Olympics.
In total, there will be ten sports represented. The World Games are held under the auspices of the International World Games Association (IWGA). It comprises 32 International Sports Federations governing all those sports that are IOC recognised but not in the Olympic Games. The Games are held under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Unlike other coaches, Boks boss Paul Treu can count on those same players being available to him because they are centrally-contracted, full-time Sevens players.
Based at a dedicated headquarters in Stellenbosch, they have committed their short to mid term futures to his Sevens programme, and it appears to be bearing fruit.
Treu's side lead the current World Series by 28 points from second-placed England after victory in the Adelaide Sevens and the runners up in Hong Kong. Although the coach is reluctant to talk prematurely of a first Series success this year, it is clear that he is bidding not just to win this season's title, but to emulate New Zealand's feats in dominating the Sevens game.
South Africa World Games wider squad: Mpho Mbiyozo, Robert Ebersohn, Frankie Horne, Vuyo Zangqa, Philip Snyman, Kyle Brown, Renfred Dazel, Ryno Benjamin, Paul Delport, Mzwandile Stick, Gio Aplon, Chase Minnaar, Lionel Mapoe, Cecil Afrika, Neil Powell
